HEALTH TIPS - LACK OF RED CELL PRODUCTION

Symptoms: severe, debilitating weakness; susceptibility to infection.

Causes: more than half the cases of aplastic anemia have no known cause. Other cases appear to be triggered by environmental agents, infection or an autoimmune response (see “Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia” above). Aplastic (literally, “incapable of producing new cells”) anemia is the name used to describe a group of rare and very serious serious disorder in which the bone marrow either decreases its production of blood cells or stops producing them altogether. Production of all blood cells white cells and platelets as well as red cells are affected.
