Commercial testing of gene therapy to treat diseases such as sickle health cell anemia has been approved by the National Institutes of Health. People with various diseases, starting with cancer and AIDS, will be entering clinical trials which means they will volunteer to act as human ‘guinea pigs to test the new techniques. Trials for sickle cell anemia and other blood disorders may start soon as well. If you suffer from a hereditary anemia, you may want to check with your physician to see whether clinical trials have begun and whether you might be eligible to participate.
