The main function of both types of white cells is to destroy disease causing substances, called pathogens that attack the body. Some also produce antibodies, which fight invaders, but which sometimes also, attack the body’s own red cells, causing anemia Platelets. These tiny structures are fragments of larger cells that form in the red marrow. Approximately two hundred red cells white cells in every cubic milliliter of blood.
The platelets job is to help blood clot. When there’s a tear in a blood vessel wall from an injury such as a scrape or a cut, platelets rush to the site and stick together forming a plug that seals the wound. Then they release chemicals that ultimately form a clot. Without enough platelets, a person may bleed uncontrollably from either an open wound or from internal bleeding. This blood loss can cause anemia.
