Among older people, if sex is given up altogether for some months for various reasons such as illness, they can lose interest in it permanently. Masturbation is recommended in such cases.
In America, women retain their interest in sex much longer than men. In the age group of 50 to 90, the over whelming majority of women give up sexual intercourse only because their husbands are no longer willing or able to have sex. Men, however, give up sex much earlier because of impotence, illness and lack of interest.
